City suspending all permitted camping and outdoor park activities

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will be suspending all permitted camping and outdoor park activities effective 6 p.m. today, September 7, 2026. City parks, facilities, and botanical gardens will remain open unless weather conditions worsen.

The City is urging residents and visitors to be prepared as Hurricane Lowell moves west of the main Hawaiian Islands.

Oʻahu remains under a Tropical Storm Warning. The City’s Emergency Operations Center remains fully activated, with City departments and first responders monitoring conditions and coordinating response operations across the island.

Hurricane refuge area opening at 5 p.m.

A hurricane refuge area will open at Nānākuli Elementary School for residents and visitors who need a safe place during the storm.

Pets are allowed. Individuals should bring food, water, medications, and other essential items whenever possible, along with necessary supplies for their pets.

As conditions worsen, residents should avoid unnecessary travel and remain in a safe location whenever possible.

Keep phones and backup batteries charged and be prepared for possible power outages. Secure any remaining loose outdoor items only if it is safe to do so.
